I’ve long been slightly annoyed that although I usually have a nice display to hand, it’s hard to just view a video stream on HDMI. However, it turns out that for about twenty pounds you can buy a little dongle which lets you capture HDMI video on a USB-C port. Specifically, I bought a Guermok Capture Card1 but others might well work.
I find it a handy monitor when I need to work out why a Raspberry Pi isn’t booting properly. The display is perfectly sharp and legible, but I’ve not tested the latency.
Having sorted out the hardware, you need some software:
On an Apple Silicon Mac the Quick Camera2 app works well.
On an iPad Pro I use the Orion3 app, which has more bells and whistles, but since it introduced me to the idea I feel a certain sense of loyalty.
