Edinbane Lodge

The best food I found on Skye. The Edinbane Lodge is an 16th century hunting lodge about halfway between Portree and Dunvegan. The food was classy; the atmosphere casual. Great produce, cooked with flair and confidence.

Antlers Bar and Grill, Portree

This great restaurant is in the Portree Hotel. It serves delicious food, nicely presented, and cooked with more flair than the menu suggests. Dinner is particularly good.

Cuchullin, Portree

Excellent food with a Scottish seafood bent in Portree.

Pizza in the Skye, Portree (?)

Improbably good wood-fired pizza, cooked in a mobile food-truck. It really is fabulous pizza in absolute terms, rather than just good for something cooked in a truck.

Birch, Portree

An elegant cafe, serving excellent espresso and fine cakes. There’s a Scandi-hipster vibe to the place, which seems to suit it, despite the surroundings.

The Old Inn, Carbost

A lovely gastropub a stone’s throw from the Tallisker distillery. They describe their food as wholesome, which doesn’t do it justice to my mind.

The Oyster Shed, Carbost

Primarily a seafood shop, though you can eat here too sitting on benches outside. The produce is wonderful. The establishment is hidden up a little road behind Carbost, and it’s popular enough in summer to make parking quite an adventure: a very worthwhile one though.

Cafe Lephin, Glendale

A lovely roadside cafe, that I will long remember for its Haggis panini: a true work of genius.

Three Chimneys, Colbost

I think it’s hard to talk about good food on Skye without mentioning the Three Chimneys—how many restaurants have their own page14 on Wikipedia ?

In practice, the food is excellent, the rooms very comfortable, and the hospitality perfect. Perhaps I expected more, but it seemed to lack a bit of je ne sais quoi.
